When you hear the word hypnosis, you may picture the Svengali-like hypnotist made popular in movies, comic books and TV. This sinister stranger waves a pocket watch back and forth, inducing his victim into a zombie-like trance. Once hypnotized, the subject is compelled to obey, no matter how bizzarre or outrageous the request!
This popular myth bears little resemblance to actual hypnotism. In fact, the modern understanding of hypnosis contradicts this concept of hypnosis wholeheartedly; the hypnotized person can not be made to do anything they do not wish to, go against their values or morals, or become a “zombie”. Stage hypnotists who appear to have this sinister ability in fact choose their subjects from the audience carefully, watching for the body language of someone who likes to show off, then counting on “peer pressure” from the audience to encourage the subject to perform.
Real, therapeutic hypnosis is a partnership between the hypnotist and the subject, with the goal of creating change through a combination of deep relaxation and “suggestibility”. Hypnosis can help you to easily access your subconscious mind, and change the “inner scripts” that dictate you behavior- including the behavior that contributes to your wealth and prosperity. Let me explain it this way; hypnosis takes you below the level of thought, to a state of “knowing”. It is in this place where miracles can happen!
Some Definitions of Hypnosis
- The American Psychological Association- “The hypnotic induction is an extended initial suggestion for using one’s imagination, and may contain further elaborations. When using hypnosis, one person (the subject- you) is guided by another (the hypnotist- Jane Ma’ati Smith) to respond to suggestions for changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior. Persons can also learn self-hypnosis, which is the act of administering hypnotic procedures on one’s own.”
- A physiological definition of hypnosis states that the brainwave level necessary to work on issues such as smoking, weight management, reduction of phobias, and athletic performance is the alpha state. Another viewpoint states that the deeper theta state is required for therapeutic change.(for a definition of the various brain wave states and frequencies, see the “therapeutic sound” page) The “Get Rich” self hypnosis audio utilizes a frequency of 7.8 to facilitate “physiological change”. This is a low Alpha/high Theta state, very good for accessing the subconscious. It also incorporates a Solfeggio frequency of 417 Hz- this frequency is reputed to “shake loose” old thought patterns and habits from the cells of your brain and body, so that you can more easily bring about change.
- Hyper-suggestibility theory-
Currently a popular theory, it states the hypnotic subject’s attention is narrowed by certain techniques used during hypnosis. As attention is narrowed, the hypnotist’s words over take the inner “script” of the subject. In this way, the self defeating behaviors and ‘self talk’ can be reshaped into a more positive and prosperous way of being.
- Informational theory- This theory uses the ‘brain as a computer’ model. In electronics, a system adjusts its feedback to increase the signal to noise ratio for optimum functioning. Increasing the receptability of a receptor enables messages to be more clearly received from a transmitter, primarily by trying to reduce the interference (noise) as much as possible. Thus, the object of the hypnotist is to use techniques to reduce the interference and increase the receptability of specific messages (suggestions). The “Get Rich” program also utilizes binaural beats and Solfeggio frequencies to further “reduce noise” and “increase receptability”, in addition to the traditional hypnotic induction and progressive relaxation.
